Working with teenagers is pretty much the coolest thing you'll ever do! Feeling a little nervous about signing up? Let us reassure you...
We're not looking for the "perfect" leader. There's no such thing! We're just looking for adults who love God and like teenagers.
Whether you're an empty nester, introvert, extrovert, young married, musician, high school dropout, bowler, biker, van owner, blue-collar worker, parent, artist, older married, college student, dental hygienist, mechanic, Taco Bell fan, single mom, accountant, new Christian, mature Christian, guy with a past, computer nerd, scuba diver, athlete, business owner, busy person, beekeeper, educator, coffee addict, cook, administrator, professional wrestler, butcher, baker, or candlestick maker...
YOU CAN DO THIS!
How to Join the Youth Ministry Team:
Step 1: Volunteer to help at a special youth event.
We always need extra hands on deck for special events, and volunteering to help at one of these events is a GREAT way to dip your toes in the water and figure out if the Youth Ministry Team is a good fit for you. You're NOT making a long-term commitment at this point. You're simply taking a test drive! Click here to find out about upcoming youth events or just send Blair an email at email@example.com and ask him when and how you can help! (Please note: You will be required to pass a background check before the event at which you plan to serve. It's nothing personal. We're just looking out for the safety of our students. Click here for the super-boring--but super-important--volunteer form. Return completed forms to the church office.) If you volunteer at one of our events and discover that working with teenagers isn't really your cup of tea, that's okay! We'll thank you for sacrificing your time and do whatever we can to help you find the ministry that fits you best. But if serving at a youth event leaves you wanting more, you can move on to step 2!
Step 2: Volunteer to help at Collision.
Collision is the name of our large-group youth environment. It's designed for all students in grades 7-12, and it happens every Wednesday night from 6:00-7:00pm. Each night of Collision is planned with non-Christian students in mind--kids who are checking this church thing out, you might say--so come expecting a fun, energetic atmosphere with lots of music and a fair amount of silliness. When you show up to serve at Collision, pretty much the only thing you'll be asked to do is hang out with students--mingle with them, play games with them, share a snack from the cafe with them, find out their names, get to know a little about them, sit with them during worship and Bible study, etc. Basically, make them feel KNOWN! We'll also ask you to help us make sure no one dies or wanders off or burns down the youth room, none of which are very likely...but no promises. :-) When you're ready to volunteer, just send Blair an email to let him know when you're planning to come! By the way, you're still test-driving the Youth Ministry Team at this point. You haven't made any kind of long-term commitment yet. But if you leave Collision with a bigger heart for teenagers and a greater desire to influence the next generation to follow Jesus, you should definitely move on to step 3!
Step 3: Commit to serve at Collision on a regular basis.
As our youth group reaches out to lost and hurting teens in our community, the Gospel will turn lives around and our numbers will grow. And as our numbers grow, so will our need for more adult leaders. Consider this: During His earthly ministry, Jesus led a group of just 12 guys (most of whom were teenagers, by the way). If Jesus Christ, the Son of God, could only handle a group of 12, how can one ordinary youth pastor ever hope to handle a group of 40 by himself?! That's why people like YOU are SO important! We need a TEAM of caring adults to show up week after week and help us make sure every single student leaves Collision feeling KNOWN, loved, and accepted...by God and by us. If you've helped at Collision once or twice, you already know what to expect and what you'll be doing. Just add to that the sense of amazement you'll experience when you realize that just "being there" can mean the world to a teenager, and you'll get an idea of what it's like to serve at Collision on a regular basis. (Note: We have an IMMEDIATE need for 4 more adults to commit to serve weekly at Collision!) If you're ready to commit, let Blair know so he can invite you over for a celebratory steak dinner (seriously!) and a little Youth Ministry Team orientation. (Click here if you'd like to get a head start on the YMT Orientation Packet!) Once you've served at Collision for a little while, you may be invited to consider moving on to step 4!
Step 4: Become a Sunday School Mentor.
Serving at Collision on a regular basis is the best way to get involved in reaching the next generation for Christ, and your involvement is SO VALUABLE! But what if you don't want to just INVOLVE yourself? What if you want to kick it up a notch and INVEST yourself? You can do that by becoming a Sunday School Mentor. Sunday School happens every Sunday from 9:45-10:45am. Students are split up by grade into small groups of 5-10 students to study a passage of Scripture and have some conversation about how it applies to their lives. As a Sunday School Mentor, you would adopt one of our grade groups and use the super-helpful resources we provide to get students talking about the Bible lesson and challenge them to live out the lesson in practical ways. We'd also ask you to get to know each of the students in your grade group, connect with them outside of church, go with them on fun outings and mission projects, and pray for them daily. (Note: We would love to have 2 more Sunday School Mentors for a new 9th-10th grade group!) Our hope is that students who participate in Sunday School will not only see how God's Word impacts every area of their lives but how they can begin to live out what it says.
